FANUC robots enable 24/7 CNC machining at RADMOT

Automated CNC machining cells comprising various machine tools and robots require astute design and integration. So why not simplify the process by turning to the world’s most prominent manufacturer of both CNC machine tools and robots: FANUC. That was precisely the strategy of RADMOT, a major Poland-based provider of machining services when it wanted to implement a new CNC milling cell involving three machining centres and two robots that could run unmanned 24 hours a day, 7 days a week – without any collisions between robots.

Task

When RADMOT, a large CNC machining specialist with over 80 machines and 200 employees wanted to implement an automated milling cell, the ultimate goal was to facilitate unmanned component manufacturing around the clock, seven days a week. The design of the cell featured three CNC machining centres and two industrial robots for workpiece loading and unloading. Care was necessary to ensure there were no potential for collisions between the two robots, which would have to work in close proximity with one another.

Solution:

RADMOT turned to its trusted robot supplier FANUC for two M-20𝑖D/25 6-axis industrial robots with 25 kg payload and 1,831 mm reach. Within the new CNC milling cell, the two robot serve a trio of existing FANUC ROBODRILL CNC machining centre models, including the latest ROBODRILL 𝛼-D21L𝑖B5. A selection of intelligent FANUC features ensures there is never any collision between robots, even though they share the same workspace.

Result

With the FANUC M-20𝑖D/25 robots in place, RADMOT is now taking advantage of completely automated machine loading and unloading, delivering 24/7 CNC milling operations without any requirement for operator intervention. Using the same manufacturer for both machines and robots, FANUC’s common control platform ensured the entire automated cell can be overseen using a single HMI.

Intelligent FANUC features ensure safety in twin-robot cell

“We have been offering precision CNC machining services for over 40 years,” states Paweł Stańczyk, Vice President at Poland-based RADMOT. “Our machine park houses over 80 CNC lathes and mills, with 17 FANUC robots supporting the production of components in medium-to-high volume batches for a vast array of customers in many different industries. We are the perfect partner for companies seeking ultra-high quality levels and large-scale manufacturing, which means we cannot imagine operating without the repeatability and productivity provided by our automated and robotised processes.”

RADMOT’s latest automation project involved the design and integration of a CNC machining cell that combines two milling processes on different models of FANUC’s ROBODRILL CNC machining centre, including the latest 𝛼-D21L𝑖B5 for versatile milling, drilling and tapping. With addition of two new FANUC M-20𝑖D/25 6-axis industrial robots, the company can now produce milled component around the clock.

“The solution was designed and implemented by our automation department,” says Bartłomiej Nędzi, Design Engineer at RADMOT. “The cell employs two FANUC robots working without collision in a shared workspace.”

FANUC's Intelligent Interference Check (IIC) software function allows the robots to monitor their position and environment to ensure there is no potential for any collisions.

FANUC M-20𝑖D/25 6-axis industrial robots feature a very slim design and a hollow arm and wrist that allows the routing of cables and pneumatic tubes inside the robot. The M-20𝑖D/25 also has IP67 protection rating for resistance to the coolant and oil mist present in machining operations.

Particularly important for the success of this automation project was the ease of connection between machine tool, robot and peripheral devices via ROBODRILL-LINK𝑖 PC software. Furthermore, RADMOT can control the entire cell from a single operator panel thanks to the common control platform shared by FANUC’s CNC machine tools and robots.

“This is certainly not the end of our automation efforts at RADMOT,” states Stańczyk. “We are proud to say that FANUC is our trusted partner in this process.”
