Factory automation and robot manufacturer FANUC is supporting Deutsche Bahn AG's maintenance operations at its new plant in Cottbus: the Hall 1 painting track of the new railway maintenance plant, which is currently under construction, will feature grinding and painting robots from FANUC. In cooperation with cabin technology specialist SLF Oberflächentechnik GmbH, FANUC is supplying a fully automated line to repaint ICE 4 carriages.

In total, ten FANUC robots will accelerate maintenance tasks in Cottbus and relieve employees of physically demanding tasks. Moreover, grinding and painting are among the industry skill sets facing a severe shortage of workers. The use of robots not only plugs any skills gaps but also helps affected companies retain production in high-wage countries like Germany.

“Robots are already firmly established in many branches of industry, and we are very pleased to supply another leading company in the field of green mobility: Deutsche Bahn,” says Jan Kamenicky, Head of Paint at FANUC Europe. “Our customers can choose from over 200 robot models, all of which meet the highest quality standards, including a wide range of painting robots.”

In the future, FANUC robots will be used in Cottbus to grind off old paint in five fully automatic robot cells and then apply primer, top coat, contrast paint and clear coat in several steps. The process will also use environmentally friendly water-based paints.
