Fully Automated Assembly of Coffee Grinders

In the manufacture of popular household appliances such as coffee grinders, a number of prerequisites determine production success. For instance, only clearly structured, efficient and target-orientated processes will result in the required levels of production reliability. Achieving this ambition becomes significantly more realistic using automation, as market leader Eugster/Frismag AG can testify following its adoption of 14 FANUC LR Mate industrial robots and FANUC ZDT (Zero Down Time), which now enable the continuous automated assembly of a coffee grinder every 7 seconds.

Key Insights from Task to Result

Task

Previously relying on 10-12 employees to perform the assembly of coffee grinders, Eugster/Frismag AG wanted to reduce its dependency on manual labour for assembly and logistics concepts around the production line without any detrimental effects on cycle time. Furthermore, working for some of the world’s leading coffee grinder brands meant there could be no compromise in quality.

Solution

Eugster/Frismag AG and its preferred system integrator Roth Technik (a long-standing FANUC partner) specified 14 FANUC LR Mate 200𝑖D/7L industrial robots to perform the assembly work previously undertaken manually. For unloading and module transfer, FANUC robot technology also provided the answer, this time with the M-20𝑖D/25. A further key component of the project was FANUC’s ZDT industrial IoT solution.

Result

The installation of FANUC LR Mate robots met all of the objectives at Eugster/Frismag AG. Now, just one employee is required to oversee the entire assembly process from start to finish, instead of 10-12 previously. In addition, the use of FANUC ZDT not only reduces unexpected downtime and maximises resources, it will also serve to increase the operating life of robots at the plant.

Coffee grinder manufacturer boosts efficiency with FANUC robots

The Romanshorn production plant is where Eugster/Frismag AG produces all coffee grinders for the group as a whole. The company’s customers include many of the world’s most renowned brands in this market space, which means the demands on quality are exceedingly high.

“We meet these demands using our expertise and dedication to continuous improvement,” states Stefan Lorch, Head of Production Engineering. “For example, we recently sought a solution to produce our coffee grinders fully automatically, instead of manually using 10-12 employees. However, the project was not without its challenges. We not only wanted to automate the previously manual processes, but also the logistics concepts around the assembly line, while maintaining the cycle time.”

Eugster/Frismag AG turned to its trusted system integrator for the solution, a company that has been working with FANUC for the past eight years on a wide variety of industrial automation projects. For the coffee grinder assembly line it was decided that FANUC LR Mate 200𝑖D/7L long-arm yet compact industrial robots would provide the optimal solution, with the company identifying their superiority to other actuator systems in terms of flexibility, accuracy and speed.

At Romanshorn, the 14 LR Mate FANUC robots now assemble a complete electromechanical coffee grinder module fully automatically in under 8 seconds. As a result, Eugster/Frismag AG has been able to increase efficiency and capacity significantly.

To minimise unplanned downtime and maximise equipment availability, the assembly line also takes advantage of the FANUC ZDT industrial IoT solution. ZDT uses predictive analytics to monitor robot health, identify potential issues and prevent unexpected downtime, ultimately maximising production throughput and optimising maintenance.
